The new MLB.com homepage look
Updated 7:41 p.m. ET on Thursday
Thanks to everyone for your important feedback regarding the relaunch of the MLB.com homepage for this Opening Day. You noticed that much has changed, from the increased emphasis on headlines and the new mediawall at the top of the page to the Attractions and the Programming in the middle to the expanded fan presence on the bottom. MLB club sites were just relaunched as well, and the next entry on this blog is where you can comment on those individually if you'd like. Thanks for your constructive opinions, which play a key role in ongoing development at Major League Baseball Advanced Media.
Also, maybe you noticed: MLBlogs are now free! New baseball blogs are being created at a rate of close to one every five or 10 minutes right now, so join them and build your own following! We also relaunched that community. Everything feels different at the start of a Major League Baseball season, and especially this year.
I liked the way the old homepage was before. The new hompage really isn't that great.

Its different.Might take a little getting used too but i dont know, it looks cool but we'll see.

it kinda of looks like a step backward technologically and aesthetically. the old way was better, and if theres a cooler look than that, thats great, but this isnt it i dont think.

great job guys, I always hated the rotating main story. Can't wait until the first game!!

I really don't like the way the new homepage looks...
When I cam on for the first time i thought something was messed up...
The old one is much more orginized and funner!!!

The Good: The new page economizes on the space and arranges everything in a new fashion that creates an ease-of-access, especially to newcomers; also, I like the quotes section at the bottom of the page
The Bad: Not the most intuitive format; you can't watch video highlights and live box scores from the main page anymore; it could be more original with the style instead of going to a generic patchwork layout
Overall: C+. Next time they decide to roll out a new format, they should invest more time into coming up with more original ideas (perhaps a tabbed interface wouldn't hurt?); in spite of economizing on space, everything just seems so crammed together, which is both good and bad
Opinion: It really isn't any better than it was before... I'd say it's about the same; they should consider hiring a squadron of digital graphics engineers (THX?)

First impressions...
1. I really miss the six rotating stories. On the old design, each one had its own thumbnails, which was really helpful for getting a sense of which stories were new. Now you have to manually click through see if there have been any updates. So that is a disappointment and a step backwards.
2. Why ditch the video on the main stories? I loved that feature.
3. The "main story" box looks crammed in, especially the text at the bottom of it.
4. I think overall, the look is a little cleaner, and the colors have been consolidated.
5. Overall, I really miss some of the functionality. It's not like the new design will prevent me from coming to MLB.com, but some of hte features you had that really stood out to me are gone!

Wow, is it possible for me to speak English? Sorry I didn't proofread that before posting!
Report any abuse or spam
It's too "busy." The old homepage may have had the same amount of stories, ads, and features but it was easier to digest and navigate. The new homepage is a messy jumble of info.
Report any abuse or spam
Nice effort, I'm sure much work went into the new home page. Here are my thoughts, pullin no punches:
1. I can see what you are going for with the new media wall. It enables you to feature nine stories (lead story at top and eight below) as opposed to the six in the old media wall. I think the old wall was more user-friendly. As a user, I instinctively thought the new media wall nav (1-2-3-4) was going to change the lead story area. Of course it doesn't, it changes the two "side-by-side" stories. Also, the loss of the video is a bad idea. The best thing you have going for you is the baseball clips that no one else has. Why take that unique content away from the home page?
One other comment - I'm not a big fan of the images you layer on top of the images in the media wall. For example, plastering a spring training logo on top of a nice photo of a player or game action. You guys do that a lot, and it take saway from the quality of the image, draws the user's attention away from what they really want to see (headlines, for example), and it just looks messy.
2. I like the new headline stack. A few more headlines, and a little less cluttered. The drop-down menu for the team headlines is cumbersome, however. In general, a drop-down should never be more than 8-10 options. Having that many to scrioll through is a pain for this user, and I just won't use it.
3. PLEASE fix your search! Your site has so much content, but it's IMPOSSIBLE to find anything that's more than 3 days old. That's because the search you are using doesn't index well, and the results display terribly.
4. Noticed you also changed the drop-down menu nav at the top. The background seems lighter, which is nice. Those are the main nav areas I use, and they are pretty solid. Wouldn't recommened tweaking them that much, because users have spent years getting used to them. I don't like the drop-downs that include images (Audio/Video, Fantasy, Tickets). In fact, it looks cheezy.
5. The headline for the lead story in the media wall should be pushed up a little, and more space should be given to the blurb and caption. What's wrong with a little white space? Your site is SO CRAMMED with stuff.
6. Definitely agree that tabbed nav sections would help reduce the clutter and help return some white space (and breathability) to your site. Like how you did that with Standings and League Leaders. How about doing that with the Shop section, and the Programming sections? Then you could spread the page out a little more, and not have text or ads EVERYWHERE. Would be much easier on the eyes for the user.
7. Most popular sites are center aligned nowadays. Any reason why you are still insisting on a left-alignment? I think the site would be more aesthetically pleasing if it were centered (ala Google, Yahoo!, YouTube, eBay, etc.)
8. Echo the comments on the blogs and message boards content. Nice to see that on the home pag. Maybe use tabbed navigation there to help reduce the need for all the space? Then the page isn't so long.
9. Accesibility is a big issue on your web site. With so much reliance on Flash/Silverlight, you must be sure to use web standards to ensure that all users can enjoy your content. A very simple way to do that would be to provide alternate content for those without the plugins. Also, please use ALT and TITLE tags for your images! I don't think there's an image on the entire MLB site that has an ALT tag. Folks with slow connections, or who surf without images on, or who are blind - can't tell what the image is. It's also standard web practice.
Well, that's it. I said I wasn't pulling any punches. Overall, MLB.com is wonderful. But honestly, I think it's a hge success in spite of the design of the web site. It's the content that drives your success. No one has what you have, and they never will. You ARE MLB, and MLB.com is where folks have to go for exclusive video and audio. That's the secret to your success. The poor design (and overall I'd say you get a D+) of the site is overcome by the overwhelming quality of your content.
Report any abuse or spam
I would second "subs" on nearly all accounts.
For those who want the highlights:
1. We miss the video
2. The media wall should be "thumbnail" based. Having to scroll through the different slides is not intuitive
3. Site search is (and was) pretty hard to use
4. Drop down menus are better, but slower to load
5. Main story feels crammed
6. Tabbed sections like stats/standings look very sharp
7. Your website content and Baseball Channel are second to none
8. Adding additional headlines at the top right is a positive
9. Making the headlines less context sensitive (i.e. based on the lead story you had selected) is disappointing
Overall I see some good things, but am hoping you'll take some of these suggestions to heart. I think you are a few tweaks away from something fantastic.
Thanks for taking the time to consider!

Are you serious? This looks very antique. The old homepage was much better than this new one. Instead of giving people a choice to use the Beta version first, you guys changed the main page to this new one. Not a good idea. Please fire the design team or ask them to restore it back to the old format or something new. This is complete garbage.
Looks like you guys want to advertise more products than the game itself. The merchandise section is huge for no reason. People are not going to get lured into buying MLB stuff, just because the Add is taking 1/2 of the page. This is very poor marketing approach and the design of the page is extremely flawed.

There is also a message board thread on the subject happening here for anyone interested (and notice the new look on the boards there as well):

I'm really not such a big fan of the new design and I definitely prefer the old one. The media control panel is quite uncomfortable to use and it seems to be a technological step back. In my opinion the main page is too cramped with unnecessary information and advertisement.
please just update the old design slightly because the old one is hard to top - and this attempt unfortunately failed.

Everyone associated with MLB.com should be proud, once again the tremendous amount of talent that y'all have comes shining through with the "new look" of MLB.com.
As I think back on the memorable years that I have been a devoted fan of MLB.com, I am reminded that as the site and community develop, the future is indeed bright at MLB.com.
I can only imagine how cool the new broadcast sets will be!
Keep up the good work, Guys and Gals!

Its "okay." Not great, not horrible. I agree that there should be thumbnails on the scroller.
One thing about MLB and team sites that has always bothered me is that some navs, teams are referred to by city, and on team site pulldown navs, they're referred to by nicknames. Just annoying..
Enough about that, any changes in store for GAMEDAY?!

Wow... talk about a giant step backwards! Last year's homepage was so much better than this year's. Who honestly thought that flattening out the homepage would actually make it BETTER??? No more rotating storyboard, the menus at the top of the page look haphazard, and the page looks so two-dimensional that it looks like the work of amateurs! Since obviously nothing we say here will make you change the page... please Please PLEASE... DO NOT CHANGE THE TEAM WEBSITES!!! Let's let this one be the only one you've screwed up!!!

Why did you screw up the best website in sports? You went from one of the most intuitive, best looking websites on the net to a design that looks like it was left over from 2001.
You asked for our feedback, and it is quite obvious that it is mostly negative. Please make use of it and bring back the old design, or at least a new one that looks like it wasn't made in Frontpage.

I really appriciate how much faster it loads, but I have an issue with the clutter. The emphasis on advertisements and mlb shop detract from my abillity to find the news and stats on the page. I was a major fan of the rotating headline, but if it causess slowdown in page loading I understand the change.
Overall, it looks like a stepp backwards to me, but it is still the best website in sports, so I am satisfied.

This new look is terrible. It's way too cluttered. The old look was much more interesting. Better luck next time!

Team sites now have the same look, but oddly enough, they have a video player when the main mlb page doesn't. I kinda like the team sites. But the 1-2-3-4 thing is still weird. Oh man, it would be cool if they were bases instead of 1 2 3 4.
Report any abuse or spam
Negatives:
1. There needs to be a link on the individual team sites to blogs that relate to that team. I can't stress that enough. And if the beat writer for that team is posting a blog, it should be featured prominently on the team page.
2. Waaaay too cluttered. Amateurish, actually.
3. The individual team sites have lost much of their individuality.
Positives:
1. The option to disable video autoplay should be a help to those with slower internet connections.
Overall:
A step backwards. Never make changes just for the sake of change.

It only took me a few seconds to be completely disapointed... not sure who you guys hired to redo your websites... but please... let them go... bring back the old format... I know you are trying to change up for the new season... but this is a pathetic joke of an "upgrade"... I am not impressed... as others have said, it's a step backwards... a FEW step backwards... its just blah... nothing exciting... the whole cookie-cutter sites thing ***** enough as it is... but then you go and do this? No thank you.

Got to agree with those that liked the old rotating news stories mediawall. I understand removing that speeded download for some, but don't think the change was worth the time saved for most people. I echo most of what previous poster "subs@geekweek.net" stated.
In a nutshell: The homepage does seem more cluttered. But since I mostly use the toolbar at the top of the site to access the news homepage and stats I won't worry about the layout too much.
You guys can do better, but I will live with it until the next change. Hope you pay attention to some of the small details suggested by other messages (Like team sites looking more individual & having all related blog links).
Thanks for attempting to stay current. I will always access your site for news & stats no matter if it looks like a three year old designed it or not. Good Luck with any future design changes!!!

I don't care for the new design. You haven't improved it so I don't understand the reason for the change. Also, there is a lot of empty space which doesn't make sense. Fifth year subscribing to MLB.com, and I don't like the changes. Why are you tinkering with a great product? I may not see it, but it looks like you removed/changed: (1) Projected Pitchers, (2)Condensed/Highlights, and most importantly, (3) Highlights/Best Plays (categorized by month/year)...a fun section for us Red Sox fans to watch memorable moments from past years in the middle of winter.

And... they changed the team homepages. Well, there goes the proverbial neighborhood. As someone who works with IT and websites, it's always a promising sign when you first load a page and up come load errors because someone wanted to push the limits of technology and didn't do it right.

I am going to close MLB.com down for the evening and - thanks for the horrible day! At least I can count on Public TV...How can you even have the nerve to put all over your homepage that it is bigger and better -- remember size doesn't matter, so add more pains in the a** with bigger and better. I wanted to check on my Fantasy teams a couple of times and both times you were doing maintenance. Not going to waste my time on your programming, sorry, but I liked spending time with Vinny and Johnny Marz, Casey listening to the callers, and the banter. Take the e-mails off the screen, and I'll believe it when you actually answer a phone call. I will catch a game or two, and check to see if the Blue Jays pitching staff still has 40 points for not even pitching in my fantasy league. Was the page built according to web standards? Was it tested against Firefox? My impression is that the answer to both questions is "No." The entire top half of the page doesn't display correctly -- large gray rectangular area at the top left; text boxes overlayed on each other; etc. If this problem doesn't get resolved, I won't be spending my time here. As someone who checked in on a daily basis all last season, it would be a big disappointment if that were to happen.

Dear MLB Advanced Media:
I am getting BLUE in the face from all the blue on your web site. One more day has not changed my mind - you have tried to do too much too fast, and we are paying for all this blue...Your moving visuals on the home page move one-way until they work through to#4, and then move the other way to move back to #1...very distracting, as its breaks a viewer's concentration. Today, I wanted to read some of my favorite bloggers, and I could not find them, but rest assured I found a MLB Advanced Media (isn't this an OXYMORON) blog assuring me that every thing was going to be super-douper in no time. I have been a subscriber to MLB.TV since its first year. That's the only way to regularly watch baseball in Italy, so I appreciate it enormously. And I know that every year, at the start of something new, some days are needed before everything works properly. But...
The general look of the page is definitely worse than last year. I loved the rotating news and the quick connections to videos, and it's all gone now. But I'm particularly upset with the new media player. The 800K feed gives a slightly worse image compared to last year's 700K, and the 1200K is still unavailable. I tried the samples and it probably won't work with my DSL connection.
A couple of days into the season, and I still don't see my lovely condensed games, the best feature of them all, and I think they're going to change the format (I saw a girl yesterday saying that the Detroit Tigers were second in the NL Central last year), while I just loved it as it was (just the last pitch of every at bat, perfect).
With Windows Media Player I could choose to skip the blank time by going forward exactly two minutes, and I can't do it anymore with this player. The mouse pointer doesn't disappear. No need to tell me to press Esc to leave full-screen mode, because when you move the mouse the control panel will appear at the botton of the page. The full screen is not really a full screen (doesn't use all the height of the screen). And so on. It seems to me a classical example of fixing what wasn't broken.
I should also say the customer service is ridiculous (1st reply: thank you, we'll consider it; 2nd reply: same thing; 3rd reply: we have forwarded your suggestions to the appropriate department. In all, three automatic replies with no answer to my questions).
In the end, it could even get much worse than that, and I will still be a premium subscriber. From here, I have no alternatives...

I think that everything is better except for the main story. I liked it when you could click on the box to see the story, and I also liked the link to the videos of great plays right on the story. I think the place that is most improved on the whole site is Gameday. That has improved drastically. I like that it now tells what king of pitch was thrown.

its not that i don't like the way the new page looks, its just that its less functional now, and more eye candy.

I cannot get any games on mlb or radio and don't have a valid phone number to call for help. But mlb got my money.

Why don't you have the year 2008 in the timeframe pulldown in the stats box on the homepage? It's nice to be able to pick and see who's leading for a specific stat like on the old website!

the new format *****. I hate it with all possible hate.
I really mis the old one. this new one looks antiquated. its hard to see what is going on and the news stores are mostly about things other than the actual games. today it took me 5 minutes to figure out the scores and stories of my favorite teams. the only thing I like on the new one is the stats box where I can see the leaders in stat categories and standings, but everything else *****

This new format is definitely not great! Go back to the old one!

As a paying member of the AUDIO for the last 4 years I have to say I HATE the new site...
REASON 1) Can't use Game Day (don't have Flash 9.0 and can't install it).
REASON 2) Audio isn't working I get the following message
Your request is being processed.
Estimated delay: 16 Sec
Followed by NETWORK ERROR
Reason 3) Isn't that enough.

I don't like it at all! It's too hard to navigate, and the homepage is too busy visually. Take a step back, please!!

Red Sox fan living in Mexico, and I can't understand why you made all those changes to a great product....And why you haven't changed back to the old page after reading all these comments from upset customers!

Last years changes were enough. There seems to be a longer delay in the 'live' action. After the Home Page everything else seems less user friendly. It's not too late to go back.

Like the new look a lot. I would change two things, though:
1. Don't use our e-mail addresses as our name in posts like this one. VERY irresponsible. You can easily create a string parser that will remove everything after the @ sign and the @ itself.
2. HATE POP-UPS! If I click on a team's preview, that's what I want to look at. Lazy navigation choice there, especially with AJAX and PHP having moved beyond that years ago. Anything that says target="_blank" needs to be changed.

not bad its okay... like what you did with the polls

I guess I will get use to the site as I use it more, but it would be a lot-lot-lot better if you would get SURVIVOR 2008 up and running. Alot of bets are riding on it.

The new look is terrible. I want to watch video when I log on to mlb.com. Please dump it.

Please get rid of the Pop-ups that appear when going to individual team sites, and the back and forth moving announcements on the home page.....both distract concentration needed to find what one is looking for.
Thanks- A premium subscriber

I would like it a lot more if the video and team page links worked! Come on MLB this is THE baseball site and the season is just underway, shouldn't this sort of stuff be done, tested and working by now. It's frustrating. Do you need to download anything to get it to work?

hate to say guys, it but I side with the majority. It just does not flow very well. Hopefully you will be able to tweak it to make it better.

The Silverlight player that we are forced to use is pathetic. It only works with IE. For those of us that use REAL browsers, it freezes up every time. I can't even open an MLB page with Firefox because it freezes almost every time. Forget trying to watch a game on MLB.tv with Firefox. Impossible.
I thought about asking for my money back, but I'd never get it. MLB only cares about the almighty dollar and cares nothing for those that spend them.
MLB has ruined the message boards with the latest format change. It's ugly and takes up entirely too much room as the font is too big.
Gameday used to be easy to see if you were not able to get audio/video of the game you wanted to see or if you wanted to keep an eye on another game while watching the game you really wanted to see. Now it's too big. You have to scroll to see all of the information and it sucks. The added information is great but they need to find a way to condense it into a much smaller package.
When watching a game on MLB.tv, the full screen o-tion really doesn't open to full screen. It may on the premium accounts but not on the basic account. The video quality is much poorer this year than it has ever been. Once again they are trying tog squeeze a few more bucks out of the consumer.

Bring back CONDENSED GAMES and HIGHLIGHTS !!!!!!!

I DO NOT like it. The reasons are many and most have been mentioned. A big reason is it is just to slow.
The one thing I do like on the team sites is what I will call the "Schedule" area where you get in game info and what network or radio station to find the game on. But there is NO XM channel information. This is a huge oversight on your part considering the partnership you have with XM.
Trying to find out what XM channel my team is on is tedious at best. Please fix this oversight.

I hate the new media player. Please go back to the original player because it has Flip4Mac and I can keep downloading top plays on to my computer and make DVDs of them.

i like the old one better, i understand that you guys want a new look and stuff, but i hate this one, its all messy and i hate the new media player that you have to install, change back everything please .

I think it's great that you guys are trying to improve with the way the site looks, personally I prefer the old way and one way to solve this might be to have both ways to look at the site, like you could have the option of which one you like better and just click on the one you want to have. I think that would be the solution since it seams like the fans are split between the old version and the new one. Hope I helped.

I like the new sites besides the loading of videos on the main pages. I know you can disable it, but it tends to hang the load time quite a bit before you can turn that feature off.
